DoFollow Links Series #006 - The Rush Hour & Directories from high altitude
The more things change, the more they stay the same
In this issue, we talk about:
Why John Rush is right about directories
What I'm doing to catch this opportunity
7 fresh backlinks opportunities, directories from John
I'm writing this from the sky, at 10,000 m altitude, in an 11-hour flight. This was the first flight during which I decided to get satellite internet (some flights provide this option).
My first impression is that, instead of losing a day, like I was used to with my other long flights, having internet available while flying makes these hours super useful and entertaining.
Enough with the intro, let's go!
A. Why do John and others say that directories are coming back?
In recent weeks and months, there has been much talk about directories.
Many new ones appear each day.
Devs are creating boilerplates so that you can build directories faster.
There are talks about launching platforms to replace PH's hegemony. These are social/hybrid directories.
John Rush created a directory masterclass and more than 1000 people have purchased it already (the Rush Hour effect)
He created related Discord and Reddit communities with hundreds of members each.
I have created the Directory Founders community on X which already has more than 130 members.
Recently, UneedBest, one of the top launching platforms, created a dedicated website for directories.
We can see that directories are trendy again!
But why is that?
There are several reasons:
In a world with much low-quality AI-generated content, curated directories can be a reliable source for people looking for information in a specific niche.
Directories are useful in sustaining your established business. If you have a business in [your niche] you probably have the knowledge and information to create a directory in [your niche] and profit from it.
A directory in [your niche] can bring you authority, leads, traffic, and money.
You can redirect visitors to your other services and products, sell ads, and listings or make partnerships. You can even create a community around your directory.
Another reason is that you can test building something faster, without the hurdles a normal SaaS brings. John recently said this and he is right. I also view directories as a low-hanging fruit SaaS.
One can deploy a directory in hours or days. If you have a viral post on X or Reddit, you can get visits and even sales on the launch day.
Another reason is that directories are popular places where you can get backlinks for free or a small fee compared with other backlink services.
In the accelerated times we live in, with many makers creating new projects, they need distribution. The right niche directory can bring visitors (instant traffic) and SEO (long-term traffic). This trend and the need for distribution will only grow. Maybe even 100x from now.
I recently tweeted there is enough room for 10M to 100M makers/founders/creators in a digital world of 10 billion people. That’s 0.1% to 1% of the population.
These makers will create many products each. Most will fail, some will win. All will need distribution. One handy channel to distribute is in directories.
So my take is: create directories! One, five, ten, many! Play with them, and talk about your products. Make connections. Get traffic. Sell. You have a good chance one will be successful. Plus you'll learn a lot in the process!
B. I'm doing the same, not just talking about it!
As you probably know, I'm already doing the same with a few directories:
I have launched (beta) a directory of directories, where you can browse them by category and country, check the DA and SpamScore, choose the best one to submit your website and get better SEO and traffic.
I said beta release because the additional services are not yet available (I’m waiting for my payment processor's approval).
I have another almost ready, codename project KING, more about it by the end of the month.
I will create a podcast directory on the domain bestpodcasts.org (probably)
I will create a startup directory on the domain liststartups.com (probably).
All these in the next couple of months
I’ve got ideas for another 2-3 directories. I'll share the details when the time comes.
Since I'm a marketing guy, not a dev, I’ll use directories to begin my founder/maker journey.
Consider doing the same. Research keywords, use data you know about, learn from John's course and other paid or free resources, and build.
You can do this almost free (with a WordPress website), with a builder like Unicorn Platform (from $9/month), or with a boilerplate, your decision. But do it!
